And the TWO shall become ONE flesh…

marriageThe definition of “marriage” in the American society is the hot topic right now in the media, and also in the highest court in the land.

God’s design for marriage in the Bible consists of one man and one woman as defined by the following Bible passages:

  • Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. – Genesis 2:24.
  • For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. – Ephesians 5:31.
  • But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife; And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. – Mark 10:6-8.
  • And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? – Matthew 19:5.

Do scientific experiments show that two do indeed become one flesh?

Research has shown that distinct and individual cells with separate DNA have been found in the brains of humans. This is known as microchimerism.

“Microchimerism (abbreviated Mc) is the presence of a small number of cells that originate from another individual and are therefore genetically distinct from the cells of the host individual.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microchimerism

“Microchimerism: The presence of two genetically distinct and separately derived populations of cells, one population being at a low concentration, in the same individual or an organ such as the bone marrow.” http://www.medterms.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=25263

Studies show that this is the case:

“Recently, our group reported the presence of microchimerism (Mc) in the human brain by performing quantitative PCR on female human brain tissues to amplify male DNA. We found brain Mc to be relatively frequent in humans and widely distributed in this organ.” http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23434631

“In conclusion, male microchimerism is frequent and widely distributed in the human female brain.” http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23049819

Articles suggest that one possible cause of this microchimerism is sexual intercourse:

“Male microchimerism was not infrequent in women without sons. Besides known pregnancies, other possible sources of male microchimerism include unrecognized spontaneous abortion, vanished male twin, an older brother transferred by the maternal circulation, or sexual intercourse… Further studies are needed to determine specific origins of male microchimerism in women.” http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16084184 (emphasis mine).

“Thus, potential explanations include an early unrecognized miscarriage, an unreported induced abortion, an unrecognized loss of a male twin in utero, or possibly cells from sexual intercourse or transfer, via the maternal circulation, from an older male sibling.” http://bloodjournal.hematologylibrary.org/content/100/8/2845.full (emphasis mine).

Is it possible that before we alter the current definition of marriage, we should be also taking into consideration the physical and spiritual processes of which we have little or no understanding?

Science writer Jena Pincott also speculates on this, “There remains a possibility, however remote, that cells from a lover may be transmitted during sex. Those cells may hang out forever in the recipient’s body, taking residence in any organ.” http://jenapincott.com/do-you-carry-the-dna-of-your-former-lovers/

This is an interesting thing to consider as we are preparing to change the way that marriage is defined in our country.

God has defined marriage for humanity for a reason, and in our best interest. Are we really so sure that changing it is a good thing?

What do you think?
